Consistent global approach on reporting of colistin doses to promote safe and effective use.

چکیده
TO THE EDITOR—Colistin, an “old” polymyxin antibiotic, is being used increasingly as a last-line therapy against infections caused by gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to other available antibiotics. Unfortunately, a multiplicity of ways of expressing doses is confounding the clinical use of colistin around the world. This is impacting the ability of clinicians to use the drug optimally to maximize the antibacterial effect, and it is compromising patient safety. At the First International Conference on Polymyxins, held in Prato, Italy, from 2 to 4 May 2013, this was one

Background and Aim: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family. There is a global emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of K. pneumoniae, a Gram-negative enteric bacterium that causes nosocomial and urinary tract infections. The aims of the present study were to identify the Klebsiella pneumoniae infections in hospitalized patients, characterization of blaCTX ge...

Over the past 20 years herbal medicinal products have become a topic of increasing global importance, with both medical and economic implications. In developing countries in Africa and Asia, botanicals have always played a central role in healthcare. Data from WHO suggest that 65 to 80% of the populations in these countries depend on traditional and botanical medicines as the primary source of ...
متن کاملFramework for optimisation of the clinical use of colistin and polymyxin B: the Prato polymyxin consensus.
In the face of diminishing therapeutic options for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant, Gram-negative bacteria, clinicians are increasingly using colistin and polymyxin B. These antibiotics became available clinically in the 1950s, when understanding of antimicrobial pharmacology and regulatory requirements for approval of drugs was substantially less than today. At the 1s...

متن کاملDefining the incidence and risk factors of colistin-induced acute kidney injury by KDIGO criteria
BACKGROUND Acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a treatment-limiting toxicity of colistin. Recently developed clinical practice guidelines from the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) group have harmonized definitions of AKI, but have not been widely applied to patients receiving colistin. METHODS We retrospectively defined AKI by KDIGO definitions among adult patients receiving in...
